The eight cognitive functions

Every type is a specific ordering of four of these eight. Understanding them individually is the only way to read a stack — and the only way to tell two similar types apart.

Ni — Introverted Intuition

The Seer · Perceiving · Introverted

Convergent foresight — many possibilities collapse into one inevitable pattern.

Ni synthesises huge amounts of subconscious material and returns a single, oddly certain conclusion. It does not reason step by step; it arrives. Ask a strong Ni user why they know something and you will often get "I just do" — the reasoning happened below the waterline.

Ne — Extraverted Intuition

The Explorer · Perceiving · Extraverted

Divergent possibility — one stimulus, an explosion of what-else.

Ne reads the world as a generator of branches. Every object, sentence, or system immediately suggests five other things it could become, connect to, or mean. It is the function that makes a conversation feel like a pinball machine.

Si — Introverted Sensing

The Archivist · Perceiving · Introverted

Subjective impression, stored and compared — the world against your internal reference.

Si builds a private archive of how things felt and how things are done. New input is automatically compared against that archive and flagged as "matches" or "is off". It is the source of both reliability and the intuition that something changed before anyone can name what.

Se — Extraverted Sensing

The Perceiver · Perceiving · Extraverted

Unmediated contact with the present — what is actually here, right now.

Se takes in the raw data of the current moment without filtering. It reads a room, a slope, a face, or a market within a fraction of a second and produces an immediate physical response. It is the most grounded and the most immediately effective of the eight.

Ti — Introverted Thinking

The Analyst · Judging · Introverted

First-principles internal logic — build the model yourself, or trust nothing.

Ti constructs a private, internally-consistent logical architecture and tests every claim against it. It cares less about whether a statement is socially accepted than whether it is coherent. When Ti finds a definitional inconsistency it cannot let it go.

Te — Extraverted Thinking

The Operator · Judging · Extraverted

External structure — measure it, sequence it, make the outcome happen.

Te organises the external world toward outcomes. It looks at a situation, identifies what needs to be true and in what order, and builds the structure — schedule, metric, hierarchy, process — that makes it happen without heroics.

Fi — Introverted Feeling

The Moralist · Judging · Introverted

Private value hierarchy — what is right, regardless of what is wanted.

Fi maintains an internal, deeply personal hierarchy of what matters. It rarely announces itself and often cannot articulate itself precisely, but when something violates it the response is immediate and non-negotiable. It is the function of personal conscience.

Fe — Extraverted Feeling

The Harmonizer · Judging · Extraverted

Relational field awareness — read it, hold it, move it.

Fe monitors and adjusts the emotional field between people. It reads a group's state in real time and instinctively acts to restore or improve it. Its judgement criterion is not "what is true" but "what does this do to us".
